Bantham Rips

6/9/2015

Great videos on how to spot a rip current and what do to if you are caught in one.
Remember = at Bantham Beach we have a permanent rip current that runs along the beach from right to left and then out past the rocks.  The bigger the swell the stronger the rip.

Devon Schools Triathlon Cup‏

Torquay Boys' Grammar School in Torbay are trying to organise a Devon Triathlon Competition and have latched onto an existing Triathlon to enable it to happen.
The triathlon (Pool swim>Velopark ride> Park run )is  in Goodrington,  Paignton on Sunday 24th May and because there are very few triathlons for children anywhere in the country we don't want your SLS Club or local school to miss out!

The English Riviera Junior VeloPark Triathlon (Sunday 24th May) takes place in Goodrington at the Torbay Leisure Centre and Torbay Velopark.  I have approached the organisers of the triathlon and they are happy to include an inter-school element to the competition.
Any pupil from year 3 up can enter but if a school wants a chance of competing for the Devon Schools Triathlon Cup then they must have a minimum of 3 pupils (3x minimum-must be one of each gender, plus one)enter the triathlon from their school.

Pupils and parents enter the triathlon online themselves.  Schools just have to promote to their pupils/parents to take part.  The categories will be- Yr 3 & 4, Yr 5 & 6, Yr7 & 8, Yr 9& 10.  The school team with the best results from each category combined wins the first inter-school Devon Schools Triathlon Cup!

The Triathlon is a Triathlon England accredited and supported event with over 100 children already entered.  The cost to enter is only £15 per student and a school does not need to accompany the students but each student must have a parent/carer with them. To encourage schools to promote attendance from their school, the Triathlon organisers are offering one FREE adult place per school (adult triathlon from noon on the same day) for teachers that organise at least 3 pupils from their school.  Schools can enter as many competitors are they want, only the top three places for that school will count for the completion.

Do you want to attend the Atlantic Games ?

Youngsters under the age of 15( born in 2000 or after) are being sought for a Devon Team.

If you are interested in being selected for the team for this years Atlantic Watersports Games in the Basque Region of Spain let Paul Tobin know now.

Contact details

07881025350 email: bidefordbay@hotmail.com.

Unfortunately the ferry is fully booked for under 16 year olds, so the younger embers will fly whilst the older members will travel on the ferry and accompany the kit..

The cost for each athlete is in the region of £500.

Those that went last year had an amazing experience.

Flood Resilience Training is about to start.

It can only be for members of SLSGB so if there is a non-member you know who wishes to take part then they would need to join it no later than a few days before they commence training.

The first two days will be 16th and 17th of May and subsequently the 4th and 5th of July.

The venue will depend to a large degree on where most people attending deadline Sunday 26th April.

After this the venue will be fixed but if there are places then they could still be taken up.

If you have any suggestions for a river with access for wading and maybe some swimming please let me know. As far as I can tell you do not need to attend all four days ore even do the training in the correct order so you could just do a day here and another there but will eventually need to complete in order to achieve competence.

There is no fee as we have obtained a grant to cover the cost of the course, hire of dry suits and other PPE. Probably you will need to bring or purchase your own food and drinks but I'll see if this can be included. I will also find out if the cost of certification is included.

I'm a little uncertain as to the format so look at the information below:

•Require a possible venue for me to look at- we will also look too.
•Number of candidates
• sizing of candidate through safequip  dry suit sizing.

We recommend that persons at this time wear wet suit boots for training and if they could bring them to the session along with under gear such as thermal/ fleece tops and leggings to be worn under the dry suit.

Spare clothes are recommended.

Also land based activities will be outside, so it is recommended that outdoor gear- wind/rain/sunshine/cold/hot

Course on day one will contain power points/ discussions/ rope work and technical gear/ in water operations

Second days will be power points/ in water operations to include non powered craft, wading, swimming, rope work, command and control, technical SAR work

It is always as is with weather and river flow rates, that time tables change so we will always try and facilitate

If intrested please contact - Barrie - barrie.charlesworth@talktalk.net
