Youth Progression
The programme for training the Youth section at Bantham builds year on year, experience and skills necessary to pas the beach lifeguard award (NaRS) as soon as they have turned 16.
We programme in an exam date towards the end of each training season and put forward over 16 youth member who wishes to take the exam.
Youth Section
Aim - To build confidence and enjoy surf safety and skills whilst developing swim and board stamina and competence. Bantham youth age 13 and 14yrs
- Thorough knowledge of beach and personal safety
- Time in the water to improve water competence, swimming and board work
- Basic Life support and first aid
All Youth will achieve Swim and Board Level 2 Competence by the end of the 2012 season. Criteria
Beach - Identify marker flags for bathing, craft and dangerous conditions
Beach - Demonstrate all signal flag communications
Beach - Explain three types of waves
Beach - Describe three types of rip currents and five ways to identify them
Beach - Explain emergency procedure if in difficulty in a rip current
Beach - Identify five hazards on the beach
Board - Demonstrate knowledge of procedure for damaged equipment
Board - Demonstrate capsize procedure
Board - Demonstrate ability to provide support using craft for a conscious casualty and signalling to shore for assistance
Board - Demonstrate basic skills for: Negotiating waves in prone position, Wave riding, Kneeling technique
Board - Demonstrate a left 360 degree turn and a right 360 degree turn beyond the wave area
Board - Complete 400 metre Board Paddle from shore to beyond the break and return in contact with the craft
Board - Able to ride a small wave in a straight line towards shore
Swim - Demonstrate basic skills for: Wading, Dolphin dives, Body surfing
Swim - Demonstrate ability to provide support using a Rescue Tube or flotation device for a conscious casualty and signal to shore for assistance
Swim - Demonstrate a 400 metre Surf Swim making best use of the prevailing conditions, in under 15 minutes
Swim - Demonstrate ability to provide support to a conscious peer with a Rescue Tube or flotation device
Swim - Demonstrate one appropriate approach to, and release from, a conscious casualty in difficulty
Assessment method: Practical assessment and verbal questioning/question paper.
NaRS group
Aim - To train and pass the NaRS Beach Lifeguard Award in Septemebr of that season. NaRS group age 16yrs by 9th September.
- Thorough knowledge of beach and personal safety
- Board and Tube rescues of conscious and unconscious patients
- Life Support and first aid
- CPR and resussitation
- Timed swim (400m in 7:30 secs) and run (100m in 40secs)
