Bantham Surf Life Saving Club
Nippers
Bantham SLSC runs its Nipper training programme every Sunday from late May to mid September from 15:00 to 16:30 and is co-ordinated by Kathy Norris.
The intention of the programe is to develop individual skills which closely mirror those already used by the qualified Beach Lifeguards. The emphasis will be on all round competence in life saving in the beach environment, leading to the ability to pass the Beach Lifeguard NARS award when 16 years old and become a qualified Beach Lifeguard. The programme aims to build:
- knowledge of sea safety
- sea and surf based skills
- all round beach and aquatic fitness and competence
leading to a greater understanding and confidence of the beach environment.
Note: The club is actively encouraging parents to become involved in the training of the Nippers as ‘spotters’ to ensure statutory safety regulations are met when the Nippers are in the sea. If you would like to help please see Kathy for further information.
The club also runs swim training one night a week in Kingsbridge pool during the off season. Supervised coaching led by Jo Lawrence starts in October and runs through to April.
Due to the high numbers of nippers wanting to swim, the club prioritises places based on attendance during the summer sessions. Each session costs £2 per child to cover the cost of pool hire.
Any child wanting to swim in these sessions MUST be able to swim 50m using a recognised stroke and will be assessed prior to being allowed into the sessions. The sessions are aimed at improving swim technique and stamina to ensure fitness for summer training.
Please note: Nippers must be 7 BEFORE the 1st of January of the year of application to be covered by insurance.
