We are thoroughly looking forward to seeing your children at the beach this summer for their Surf Life Saving Youth training - hopefully in some lovely sunshine – starting this Sunday!
We would like to take this opportunity to wish a very warm welcome to our new members and their families.
This email contains important information regarding your child's training. Please take a couple of minutes to read through all of it, and make note of the times and dates.
Our 2016 Youth Training will again be based around the SLSGB Award system. For those youths in years 9 and 10 –most will be starting their journey to become lifeguards by taking part in the new Graduate Lifeguard Programme, a 3 year programme that culminates in them hopefully achieving their Lifeguard award. Those in Year 8, will get the opportunity to start on this programme in September this year.
Training will be held on all Sundays in June, July and September. 13 weeks in total.
On 5.6.16, our first training session will run from 12.45-2.30pm, then on all subsequent Sundays, Youth Training will be between 1 and 2:30pm.
BSLSC continually encourages and expects high attendance rates at youth training, to maximise the benefits for our members, to show respect to all the volunteers that work hard to provide the training and safety cover, and also to be fair to those that may be waiting for a training space.
All our Coaches, Parent Helpers and Lifeguards very kindly volunteer their time and enthusiasm to train your children in what is a particularly challenging environment. Please support by ensuring that your child turns up fit and prepared to train. Please do not increase the challenge by expecting trainers to deal with children who are too tired, injured or too unwell, to train.
Bearing in mind that the beach is an exposed and unpredictable environment, please ensure your child is as prepared as possible by:
- Arriving early!
- Ensuring they have had adequate food and water throughout the morning, prior to training.
- Wearing a well-fitting, full length wetsuit.
- Applying sun cream to exposed skin.
BSLSC expects parents (or a named guardian - please inform your child's trainer before the session starts) to remain on the beach throughout their child's training session, and also prompt collection of children at the end of training. It is imperative that your child signs out at the end of their session - please support by ensuring they do so.
Values – two essential values for being a lifeguard, teamwork and respect, are central to our training. Alongside the SLSGB Awards and Club Champs etc, we hope that all the children will develop these values to a high level during training with us. We hope (expect!) that all parents will support us in this. One way of doing so is by becoming a valued member of the BSLSC team, if you have not already done so. More information will follow on how you can contribute, to keep your/your child's club thriving.
