We are thoroughly looking forward to seeing your children at the beach this summer for their Surf Life Saving training, hopefully in the lovely sunshine!
We would like to take this opportunity to wish a very warm welcome to our new members and their families.
We base our training on the SLSGB Nipper Level and Surf Competence Award system.
We will be working through Nipper Participant Awards and Surf Competency Awards - from page 89 in the Awards Guide - click here for more details
Last year we began training our members in groups according to their ability (rather than age groups) and we will continue to so this summer.
Training in age groups was challenging because we were guiding single groups of children through 2 or 3 different awards simultaneously, depending on their ability and attendance.
We hope that by continuing to use the grouping by ability system, we will be better able to help all the children achieve their full potential. So, depending on their level of achievement last year, your children will either be in a Nipper Level group (nos. 1-4) or a Surf Competence group (nos. 1-3).
For a few this will mean that they will be moving from, or staying in, the earlier/later time slot unexpectedly - It may also possibly mean a change of session time during the season.
Training will be held on all Sundays in June, July and September. 12 weeks in total.
Please note that there will be no training during August.
Surf Competence training will be between 1 and 2:30pm,
Nipper Level training will be between 3 and 4:30pm.
All our Coaches, Parent Helpers and Lifeguards very kindly volunteer their time and enthusiasm to train your children in what is a particularly challenging environment. Please do your bit by ensuring that your child turns up fit and prepared to train.
Please do not increase this challenge by expecting trainers to deal with children who are too tired, injured or too unwell, to train. Bearing in mind that the beach is an exposed and unpredictable environment, please ensure your child is as prepared as possible by:
* Arriving early!
* Ensuring they have had adequate food and water throughout the morning, prior to training.
* Wearing a well fitting, full length wetsuit.
* Applying suncream to exposed skin.
As usual, we will not accept latecomers to training. If your child has not arrived in time to be registered, please do not attempt to get them to join their group. Risk assessments will have been completed, trainer and parent helper/children ratios will have been sorted and sessions planned. Not only could it be unsafe, it would also be rude.
BSLSC expects a parent (or a named guardian - please inform your child's trainer before the session starts) to remain on the beach throughout their child's training session, and PROMPT collection of children at the end of training. It is essential that your child signs out at the end of their session.
Values – the two essential values for being a lifeguard, teamwork and respect, are central to our training. Alongside the SLSGB Awards and Champs, we hope that all the children will develop these values to a high level during training with us. We hope (expect!) that all parents will support us in this, by becoming a valued member of the BSLSC team themselves, if they have not already done so. More information will follow on how you can contribute, to keep your child's club thriving.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Many thanks, Jo.firstname.lastname@example.org
The clubhouse will also be open so come on down have a look and have a cup of tea.
We will also have our wetsuit rail so if you have any suits you wish to get rid of bring them down - 10% proceeds go to club
